Summary

We are recruiting for an Advanced Process Control (APC) Specialist/Engineer for our either our Edmonton or Calgary office. In this role, you will be responsible for participating in the entire life cycle of process control optimization and reliability improvement projects, including: executing feasibility studies, process analysis, data analytics, business case development, advanced application development, solution engineering, implementation, site commissioning, and on-going solution support to ensure sustainability of business results. The APC Specialist/Engineer will demonstrate value by supplying process control solutions that are robust and delivering quantifiable business results to our customers. This position reports to the Manager, Advanced Process Control Services. 


This position is open to both new graduates and experienced engineers.

Role and Responsibilities

  • As a key element of our Maintenance-Reliability-Performance initiative, your focus will be on improving our customers’ operational reliability and performance through the application of our advanced technologies, industry specific process knowledge and control engineering expertise
  • Provide technical application including but not limited to the implementation of Emerson Process Management Advanced technologies (DeltaV and AspenTech) and solutions to Customers and maintain awareness of their technical requirements 
  • Leverage DeltaV advanced technologies to improve/optimize performance & reliability at Customers’ plants 
  • Process Reliability and Control Performance Studies
    • Work with our customers’ processes and engineers to study and identify opportunities for process reliability and performance improvements through the application of advanced process control
    • Conduct regulatory control studies that assess the health of the loops, and identify ways to reduce variability
    • Regulatory Control loop tuning and optimization
    • Process and control strategy assessment studies that provide recommended improvements in a written report that includes an action plan and cost/benefit analysis for proceeding.
  • Data Analytics, Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence Solutions
    • Analyze large amounts of complex process data to assess operating patterns, identify process bottlenecks, detect process or equipment failures and develop advanced monitoring solutions.
    • Apply machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms, methods and techniques to develop innovative solutions for asset monitoring, predictive maintenance and process control. 
    • Development of KPI dashboards and combining data from multiple sources into meaningful outputs.
  • Solution Configuration 
    • Collaborate with our APC Specialist/Engineering team and customers to design and implement advanced control strategies, safety/interlock logic, soft sensors, and complex logic, ensuring the delivery of a fully functional solution.
    • Develop Human-Machine Interface (HMI) graphics 
    • Interface with third party products (PLCs, HMIs, OPC Clients, Historians) 
    • Develop dynamic process simulations for testing and for Operator Training Solutions (OTS).
  • Internal Verification and Factory Acceptance Testing 
    • Prepare process simulations and internal test plans
    • Conduct Internal Hardware and Software Acceptance Testing 
    • Conduct Factory Hardware and Software Acceptance Testing with customers 
  • Site Acceptance Testing with Customers 
    • Regulatory control loop tuning
    • Control strategy and advanced solution integration
    • Process bump testing and modeling
    • Commissioning of Model Predictive Controllers (MPC) - DeltaV or Aspen DMC+
    • Participate in customer review meetings, including HAZOPs etc.
    • Troubleshooting 
    • Alarm management and rationalization activities
    • Conduct technical/operator training on the advanced technology solutions.
  • Provide technical support during system shutdown and start-up activities 
  • Provide technical support and situational expertise for sales teams as required 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Undergraduate Degree or Master’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science
  • SAP experience considered an asset
  • Experience with DCS system and knowledge in process control/APC will be an asset
  • Experience with commercial machine learning or artificial intelligence platform will be an asset
  • Exceptional communication skills and customer service practices 
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment 
  • Entrepreneurial work ethic 
  • Willing to travel; valid Class 5 driver license required
  • This position has been deemed as Safety Sensitive – successful candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment Alcohol and Drug test
