Summary
We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Specialist who will be responsible for commissioning, testing, and energizing electrical equipment.
The successful candidate will also be a technical leader and mentor, guiding other Specialists in developing strong technical service capabilities and deepening their ability to interpret drawings and analyze and correct technical problems. In addition to supporting field activities, you will be responsible for supporting the creation and maintenance of service programs, along with creating documentation such as test procedures, commissioning plans, and test reports.
You will play a key role in knowledge transfer between teams - standardizing best practices, sharing technical insights, and mentoring other Spartans to build confidence and capability in complex service tasks.
You’ll work closely with customers, project delivery teams, and manufacturing to ensure all service work is completed safely, accurately, and to the highest standards of quality and technical excellence.
Role and Responsibilities
- Perform acceptance, maintenance, and diagnostic testing of electrical equipment up to 15 kV equipment, including:
- Switchgear including circuit breakers and switching devices;
- Motor control devices including Variable Frequency Drives and Motor Control Centers;
- Power and instrument transformers;
- Cable termination and testing;
- Automatic Transfer Switches;
- Protection Relays and Control Systems for power equipment
- Commission and validate control circuits for protection, indication, interlocking, and monitoring
- Administer lifecycle programs such as operator training, power quality analysis, infrared thermography, vibration analysis, oil analysis, partial discharge testing
- Interpret single line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, and relay configuration files.
- Create test reports, test plans and procedures following NETA and other industry standards
- Organize and analyze test reports, identify deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions. Provide continuous feedback and areas for improvement to internal stakeholders
- Champion safety procedures, LOTO, arc flash, electrical safety standards, and environmental guidelines
- Work safely alongside construction and commissioning teams
- Strong analytical thinking and ability to interpret system behavior, trace circuits, and diagnose issues under pressure
- Effective problem‑solving determining root cause of issues
- High attention to detail following test procedures, documents accurately, and catches errors others may miss
Qualifications and Skills
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Power System Electrician or Journeyman Electrician with industrial experience is an asset
- NETA Certification (Level I–III) or equivalent testing certification is an asset
- 4+ years of field commissioning or testing experience
- Experience in up to 15 kV distribution networks; experience >15kV considered an asset
- Hands‑on relay testing with practical experience using:
- Relay test set, Megohmmeter, Ductor, TTR, VLF test sets, AC Hipot
- Testing software such as Omicron Test Universe, Doble M4000 series, AcSELerator
- Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), Multilin, Schneider relays
- 2 years active exposure to protection, controls, substation commissioning, or automation (asset)
- Entrepreneurial work ethic, self-starter with a desire to thrive in a fast-paced team environment
- Extensive and exceptional customer relationship/service practices
- Must work in adverse weather conditions
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with driver’s abstract
- Willingness to work rotations and travel to regional locations and Customer sites when required
This position has been deemed Safety Sensitive. As such, the successful candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment Alcohol and Drug test.
