Summary
We are currently recruiting for an Engineer, Projects (Instrumentation and Controls) for our Combustion Management and Industry Applications Centre of Excellence (CoE) Project team, based out of Calgary. Reporting to the Manager, Combustion Management and CoE Operations, the successful candidate will be a key member of our S3 project team, participating in the entire life cycle of projects, from initial system audit, new control system design (hardware, software, control narrative, cause & effect / shutdown keys, etc.), FAT/i-FAT, and site commissioning and start-up (C&SU).
This is a Temporary opportunity (approx 16 months)
This role presents the opportunity to work with a leading supplier of Industrial Combustion Systems in Western Canada, working with all sectors of large industry. Our packages include: BMSs, Combustion Controls (CCS), Fuel Trains, Custom Burner Applications, High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS), Hydrogen blending solutions, etc. Our combustion solutions cover Steam Generation (Water tube & firetube Boilers/OSTG/HRSG), Process Heaters, Low and High Temperature Drying Applications, Incinerators, Reboilers and Industrial Furnaces.
Role and Responsibilities
- Select and specify process instrumentation, such as:

- Control valves, pressure regulators, relief valves, isolation valves and gauges
- Switches and Transmitters
- Electric and Pneumatic actuators
- Control hardware
- Flame scanners
- Buyout instrumentation
- Generate instrument datasheets, including information regarding sizing, specifications, product and material selections, and accessories.
- Develop instrument and equipment index.
- Generate controls engineering documentation: control narratives, shutdown keys, cause and effect charts, SAMA diagrams, state transition diagrams, and alarm & trip setpoint lists.
- Generate test procedures for FAT, SAT, and commissioning.
- Support IVT/FAT and site commissioning.
- Interpret and apply CSA B149.3 clauses to the combustion control system, especially for fuel trains, interlocks, purge, ignition, and shutdown sequences.
- Review and Authenticate final Professional Work Products, including instrument datasheets, sizing calculations, controls engineering documentation, and technical reports.
- Review and redline P&IDs, PFDs
- Support internal and external customers with equipment and process knowledge.
- Work closely with mechanical, electrical, process, and safety teams to align control system design with customer requirements.
- Participate in hazard reviews (HAZOP/LOPA) to confirm safety layers are adequate.
- Ensure compliance of instrumentation with applicable codes (eg: CSA B149, CSA C22 and ASME Section I, IV, VIII)
- Participate in our 7/24 on call rotation.
- Provide technical support for Sales Teams
Qualifications and Skills
- B.SC. in chemical engineering, or electrical engineering (emphasis on instrumentation and controls)
- Licensed by APEGA to practice engineering in Alberta.
- Minimum 3 years of experience sizing and selecting instrumentation.
- Minimum 5 years of experience generating controls engineering documentation.
- Working knowledge of processes, including combustion, pipelines, gas plants, oil production, Oil Sands, and mining
- Knowledge of CSA B149.3 is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 principles when designing safety instrumented functions (SIFs) within the BMS
- Experience in burner management system (BMS) design is considered an asset.
- Ability to read control panel schematics and troubleshoot wiring issues.
- Aptitude for prioritizing multiple tasks and managing multiple assignments.
- Ability to identify the problem, effectively use resources, generate alternatives, choose and implement solutions.
- Exceptional communication skills and customer service experience and practices
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Creative and innovative thinker.
- Willingness to travel; valid Class 5 driver’s license required.
