Summary

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Quality Specialist with a strong engineering background to lead quality assurance, design verification, inspection, and testing of engineered electrical equipment, with primary emphasis on medium-voltage switchgear and distribution systems.

The successful candidate will apply technical expertise and detailed knowledge of industry standards IEEE C37.20.2, ANSI C37.100, UL 891, CSA C22.2 No. 31, and related project requirements to verify that medium- and low-voltage designs are safe, compliant, manufacturable, testable, and fully documented.

Working closely with Engineering and Design, the successful candidate will review engineered deliverables throughout the design lifecycle, identify code and standards non-compliances before release to manufacturing, and translate applicable requirements into a test plan and procedures to support inspection acceptance criteria.

The role will also perform and oversee detailed inspections and testing, support root-cause analysis and corrective action, and strengthen repeatable quality practices across Engineering, Manufacturing, Testing, Project Management, and project delivery.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Lead detailed design verification, QA/QC inspection, functional testing, and acceptance testing of manufactured electrical equipment and systems, with primary focus on medium-voltage switchgear and associated protection and control systems.
  • Perform and support electrical testing, configuration, and technical verification of medium- and low-voltage equipment, including switchgear, circuit breakers, bus systems, interlocks, grounding, VFDs, MCCs, transformers, protection relays, control systems, auxiliary circuits, cables, and terminations.
  • Perform electrical testing using equipment such as relay test sets, Megohmmeters, Ductors, transformer turns ratio (TTR), very low frequency (VLF) test sets, and AC HiPot equipment.
  • Verify equipment design, construction, and functionality against approved single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, Bills of Material, specifications, device configurations, calculations, and other engineered deliverables.
  • Perform structured design-compliance reviews for medium-voltage metal-clad switchgear against IEEE C37.20.2 and applicable ANSI C37.100 requirements, including ratings, construction, compartmentalization, grounding, interlocking, insulation, bus arrangements, accessibility, and required production/design tests.
  • Perform structured design-compliance reviews for low-voltage switchgear and industrial control equipment against UL 891 and CSA C22.2 No. 31, as applicable to the equipment scope, project specifications, and authority requirements.
  • Create and maintain design-verification checklists and documented compliance evidence that trace code and standard requirements to drawings, calculations, component selections, manufacturing details, inspection points, and test results.
  • Review design changes, deviations, and non-conformances for standards impact; work with Engineering and Design to implement compliant resolutions.
  • Support Internal Verification Testing (IVT), Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and Software Acceptance Testing (SFAT).
  • Develop and execute engineering-based test plans, test procedures, inspection checklists, and test reports that translate applicable code, standard, customer, and project requirements into defined test methods and objective acceptance criteria.
  • Organize and analyze inspection and test results, identify deficiencies, document findings, and coordinate corrective actions with responsible stakeholders.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, control, protection, communication, configuration, and manufacturing issues identified during inspection and testing.
  • Maintain quality records documenting inspections, test results, deficiencies, corrective actions, equipment configurations, and final acceptance.
  • Partner with Engineering and Design throughout concept, detailed design, release, manufacturing, and testing to resolve technical questions, verify compliance, and prevent design-related non-conformances from reaching production or the customer.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying recurring defects, design and manufacturing challenges, and documentation gaps; supporting root-cause analysis and corrective actions; and championing sustainable improvements in quality, repeatability, manufacturability, testing, documentation, efficiency, and project execution.
  • Support standardization of electrical design-verification methods, QA/QC procedures, inspection criteria, testing practices, manufacturing standards, with emphasis on consistent and repeatable medium-voltage execution.
  • Perform inspection and testing with a high attention to detail, following approved procedures and electrical safety requirements, including LOTO and arc-flash practices, while accurately documenting results and identifying issues that could affect equipment safety, functionality, quality, or customer requirements.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, supported by relevant experience with engineered electrical equipment, design verification, and code/standards compliance; eligibility for professional registration is an asset.
  • Power System Electrician or Journeyperson Electrician with relevant industrial experience is an asset.
  • NETA Certification (Level I-III) or equivalent electrical testing experience or certification is an asset.
  • Strong engineering experience with electrical equipment design, design review, manufacturing, testing, commissioning, or QA/QC in an engineered-to-order environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with medium-voltage metal-clad switchgear and distribution systems up to 15 kV is strongly preferred; experience above 15 kV is an asset.
  • Working knowledge and practical application of IEEE C37.20.2 and CSA 22.2 No 31 requirements for medium-voltage switchgear and circuit-breaker assemblies.
  • Familiarity with UL 891 and CSA C22.2 No. 31 requirements and their application to low-voltage switchgear and industrial control equipment.
  • Experience developing test procedures, inspection criteria, and acceptance documentation that demonstrate adherence to applicable codes, standards, and customer specifications.
  • Experience with low-voltage MCCs, VFDs, motor control, protection, controls, and distribution equipment is an asset.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical testing and test equipment such as relay test sets, Megohmmeters, Ductors, TTR, VLF, and HiPot equipment is an asset.
  • Experience programming and configuring electrical protection, control, metering, motor control, and intelligent electrical devices.
  • Advanced ability to review and verify single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, Bills of Material, equipment layouts, calculations, and relay configuration files for technical accuracy and standards compliance.
  • Strong analytical thinking with the ability to interpret system behaviour, trace circuits, troubleshoot issues, and determine root cause.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify process gaps and lead practical continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to completing accurate, traceable inspection and test documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface strongly with Engineering and Design, challenge technical details constructively, document compliance gaps clearly, and drive timely resolution across Project Management, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Testing.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to provide clear, constructive technical feedback.
  • Entrepreneurial work ethic, self-starter, and desire to succeed in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to work with electronic drawings, test documentation, and quality records.
