Summary

We are currently recruiting an Automation Specialist for our Combustion Management and Industry Applications CoE Project team, based out of our Calgary Solutions Centre. Reporting to the Manager, Operations - Combustion Management and Industry Applications CoE, the successful candidate will be a key member of our S3 project team, participating in the entire life cycle of projects, from initial system audit, new control system design (hardware, software, control narrative, cause & effect / shutdown keys, etc.), configuration/programming, FAT/i-FAT, and site commissioning and start-up (C&SU).

 

This role presents the opportunity to work with a leading supplier of Industrial Combustion Systems in Western Canada, working with all sectors of large industry. Our packages include: BMSs, Combustion Controls (CCS), Fuel Trains, Custom Burner Applications, High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS), Hydrogen blending solutions, etc. Our combustion solutions cover Steam Generation (Boilers, OSTG, HRSG), Process Heaters, Low and High Temperature Drying Applications, Incinerators, Reboilers and Industrial Furnaces.

Role and Responsibilities

Design:

  • Collaborate with internal and external project team members to define functional requirements
  • Develop and review controls engineering documentation: control system architectures, control narratives, shutdown keys, SAMA diagrams, Communication mapping tables and alarm and trip setpoint lists

Configuration and Programming:

  • Configure control strategies for Burner Management Systems (BMS), Combustion Control Systems (CCS), High Integrity Pressure Protection (HIPPS), Hydrogen Blending and other applications on multiple control platforms: DeltaV, DeltaV SIS, AB PLCs, etc
  • Develop Human-Machine Interface (HMI) graphics
  • Configure interfaces such as Modbus or OPC connections

Internal Verification and Factory Acceptance Testing:

  •  Create testing documentation
  • Support internal hardware testing o Conduct internal verification testing (IVT)
  • Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with customers
  • Conduct and support Integrated Factory Acceptance Testing (I-FAT) with customers either in-house or at customer facilities

Commissioning and Start Up Activities:

  • Conduct Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) with customers
  • Perform loop checks
  • Conduct HMI and configuration logic checks
  • Support third party communication interfaces
  • Loop tuning
  • Setting up air fuel ratio characterization curves with our combustion field technicians
  • Create commissioning reports
  • Provide operator training for the systems commissioned

Ongoing Support:

  • Provide support for our installed base both remotely and on-site
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor for the customer, focusing on providing expertise and value
  • Provide technical support for sales and engineering teams as required
  • Participate in 7/24 phone support rotation (approximately 1 x 1 week rotations per year)

Continuous Learning:

  • Proactively contribute to the team learning, knowledge sharing and process improvements
  • Provide input into improvement of engineering and service processes and practices

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (emphasis on Process Control an asset) or Instrumentation Engineering Technologist Diploma
  • 3+ years’ experience with control system configuration, preferably Emerson DeltaV, DeltaV SIS or Allen Bradly platforms is preferred
  • Proficiency with reading and understanding engineering documents (control narratives, piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), shutdown keys, single line diagrams, control panel schematics, etc) is required
  • Knowledge of CSA B149.3 code is considered an asset
    • ExpeDeltaV and DeltaV SIS
    • Rockwell, and Modicon PLCs (RSLogix 5000, Concept, Unity)
    • Fuel/Air ratio controls, both mechanical and automated
    • Loop Tuning
    • Modbus Communications
    • Field commissioning and startup (CS&U) experience
    • Burners and combustion systems
    • Combustion Applications: exprience with any of the following considered an asset
      • Boilers, OTSGs, and HRSGs
      • Direct and Indirect Fired Air Heaters
      • Rotary and Fluid bed dryers
      • Sulphur Recovery processes
      • Thermal oxidizers, effluent processing and incinerators
      • Media heaters, i.e. oil, glycol etc.
      • API natural draft heaters, single and multi-burner
    • Industry Applications (CoE):
      • High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS)
      • Hydrogen blending process is considered an asset
  • Experience with field instrumentation an asset
  • Good troubleshooting skills, and ability to think on one’s feet
  • Aptitude for prioritizing multiple tasks and managing multiple assignments
  • Exceptional communication skills and customer service experience and practices
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Entrepreneurial work ethic
  • Safety conscious and able to complete applicable safety training (e.g. H2S Alive, CSTS, First Aid, etc.)
  • Willingness to travel to customer facilities; valid Class 5 driver license required
